Is Social Media Worth It?
100%. A business should definitely have a social presence where customers can easily communicate with you, leave reviews, offer feedback, etc. Social media is a great way to keep your brand in front of the people who wish to "subscribe," "follow," "friend," or become your "fan." Do you know that many of your customers use social media to check how legit your business is? If you're not posting updates, you are missing out on new customers, repeat customers, new sales, & new relationships. Bottom line: we strongly encourage the use of social media!
Improve Rankings & Traffic
Nowadays, everything online is connected one way or another. Having a good social media presence does affect your search engine rankings. It's also a great way for people to share your business with their friends and family, which drives additional targeted traffic for free. A few hundred solid shares of good, relevant content can go a long way for a small business.
Ahh, good ol' Facebook. Did you know that Facebook no longer shows posts made by businesses to all of your subscribers unless you pay to “boost” your business postings? After all that effort to gain friends and followers, these business pages have lost the power they once had, and the value of a “friend” or “fan” or “follower” has dropped.
That does not mean you should stop trying to gain friends and followers, it just means we have to come up with really creative ways to engage your audience once we build it. It’s an ongoing process that never ends.
The visual social media platform of the web, Instagram is wildly popular. It uses images & videos to relay information to followers and is lighter on written content. Users double-tap to "heart" or "like" an image, or hit the flag to "save it."
Have you heard the recent chatter about Instagram's post algorithms? Instagram may display someone else's post over yours for a multitude of reasons, like the amount of "likes" and "saves" you get. Take a deep breath. It's updates like these that we keep track of so you don't need to worry about them.
The inventor of the #hashtag, this social media platform is a must have for businesses. Use the 280 character limit to post a short blurb about what's new and happening. You can also post photos and videos, just like all other platforms, but Twitter is more about conversations. To get the most out of Twitter, we suggest mentioning other users, businesses, and profiles to catch their attention. Need to try it out? Open your Twitter, create a new post, and mention @sitesmartmktg. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
LinkedIn is the ultimate networking beast of the internet. As a business owner reading this, you should be nodding in agreement! Create your business profile, connect with fellow employees, create new relationships, and network within your industry. Post content to your profile (like relevant articles from your network), share business updates, and market your services. Or, share articles and posts from other profiles that apply to your industry. Message and and network with other users. Do you see a trend here? Network, network, network!
The Effort On Your End
Don't freak out! It's not a lot, but there are a few things you need to manage.
Though we keep your social media presence fresh and updated, you still need to be involved by pushing people to your social media as part of your regular business practices.
Social marketing needs attention from a person who can immediately engage and answer questions. This is why we strongly recommend that a dedicated person inside of your company be involved with personally interacting with your customer base.
Ideally, that same person can be our main point of contact for monthly updates. If you're feeling shaky and need some #SocialGuidance, we offer consulting sessions with our team, too.
To be crystal clear, we do not offer real-time response, private messages, or social media monitoring as part of our service.
Here's What We Suggest
- Invite your regular contacts to "follow your business" from your own personal social media accounts.
- Ask staff to invite friends and family from their personal social media accounts. Give bonus incentives or set up a contest to reward participation.
- Always mention your activity on social media during meetings, conventions, and networking events, etc. Invite new contacts to join you there. Get their @name and follow them to encourage reciprocation.
- Add social media links to your email signature.
- Join lots of groups and get involved in discussions on related topics in your industry.
- Add and follow people that are local movers and shakers, news sources, and industry-related professionals. Start engaging them online during discussions, then invite them to like your business page.
- Consider paying for clicks to boost your follower count.
